What’s up with people adding butter to their coffee? Yes, butter in coffee is a thing. There’s a popular butter coffee recipe and even fad diets.
Just a handful of years ago, the thought of adding butter to coffee would be regarded by most people as utterly disgusting.
But with the recent popularity of Bulletproof Coffee, butter and coffee together now makes as much sense as chocolate and peanut butter.
In case you’re not familiar with Bulletproof Coffee, it was created by an entrepreneur who got the idea for butter in coffee after vacationing in Tibet. While there, he drank teas that were fortified with yak butter.
Bulletproof Coffee, in addition to containing butter, also contains coconut oil. The idea of butter coffee is that it’s both nutritious and less jittery than regular coffee.
BUTTER COFFEE RECIPE
A simple, typical butter in coffee recipe involves brewing coffee in a French press. While the coffee is steeping in the French press, you place in a blender 1-2 tbsp of butter.
Keep in mind that grass-fed butter is much healthier for you than butter that’s made from grain-fed cows.

Continuing with the butter coffee recipe, add to the blender sugar-free sweetener such as stevia (if needed).
You can also add unsweetened almond milk, coconut milk or any other milk alternative. (If you want to use a bit of regular cow’s milk, raw milk is preferred.)
Adding coconut oil is optional. Some health experts contend that consuming coconut oil and butter is not healthy because of all the fat.
Sprinkle some nutmeg and/or cinnamon. You can also use vanilla extract to add extra sweetness and flavor.
After 3-4 minutes of steeping in the French press, the coffee should be ready to add to the blender. Blend for approximately 30-60 seconds. The end result is a frothy, rich, delicious, creamy coffee.
Butter in Coffee
- 2 tablespoons coffee beans freshly ground
- 1 cup hot water
- 1-2 tablespoons butter preferably grass-fed
- 5 drops SweetLeaf stevia drops optional
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened almond milk or coconut milk optional
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil optional
- dash nutmeg or cinnamon or splash of vanilla extract optional
Add ground coffee to French press then pour over hot water. Steep for 4 minutes.
While coffee is steeping, place butter in blender. Add optional ingredients as desired.
When coffee is done steeping, add to blender and blend for about 30-60 second until frothy.
BUTTER COFFEE DIET
Butter coffee is breakfast for many people who follow a low carb keto diet. The natural fat in the butter (and coconut oil if you’re adding it as well) is filling.
If you’re used to eating a heavy breakfast, going on a butter coffee diet to lose weight may prove difficult at first.
Even with the filling fat, drinking a cup or two of butter coffee is lower in calories than a typical breakfast of say, bacon, eggs, and toast.
Also, butter coffee is very low in carbohydrates, especially if you’re using unsweetened milk and zero-calorie sweetener.
If your breakfast typically includes bagels, toast, English muffins, donuts and the like, you may experience a low-carb temporary quasi-illness.
One benefit of drinking butter coffee is that it can provide sustained energy. Regular coffee or caffeinated drinks can make you feel jittery. But the natural fat in butter (and coconut oil) provides a more streamlined energetic feeling.
BUTTER IN COFFEE FOR WEIGHT LOSS
The natural fat in butter coffee may even help you lose weight. The concept of consuming butter and coffee to lose weight may seem oxymoronic.
Most people think that eating butter will make you fat, not skinny. But it’s the essential fatty acids—specifically the polyunsaturated Omega-3 fatty acids—in butter that may promote weight loss.
If you’re following a butter coffee diet, you’re most likely consuming less calories at breakfast without sacrificing your energy level. This is one way butter coffee can aid in weight loss.
There are many health benefits of butter you may not know. But, let’s get back to the essential fatty acids.
There are over 400 fatty acids in butter. The rock star fatty acid is CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), which has become a trendy weight loss supplement. Butter also contains antioxidants, vitamins, such as K2, and minerals.
According to this study, which involved human participants, CLA encourages at least modest weight loss results.
Another study examined CLA’s efficacy compared to a CLA-free diet and a placebo, which was olive oil. The group consuming CLA showed the greatest reduction in body mass index after consuming it for one year.
BUTTER IN COFFEE ORIGIN
As emphasized, you’ll only get the greatest benefits from drinking butter coffee if the butter comes from a grass-fed cow. In some areas, it’s impossible for cows to consume grass all year. Think of Southern California, where in the summer, much of the farms are parched and green grass becomes scorched and brown.

As one would expect, butter coffee tastes like, um, coffee with butter in it. But it’s less buttery than you might think; it’s not that overpowering.
If you’re leery of how butter in coffee is going to taste if you’ve never tried it, only add a half tbsp in the blender.
If you’re a coffee purist, you may not like anything interfering with the taste of your morning brew. But dark roasts will still be the dominant taste in butter coffee, not the butter.
Some people drink coffee with butter in the morning. Then, they will have have a regular cup of coffee, sans butter, in the afternoon.
The truth is that healthy, essential fatty acids should be a part of your diet on a daily basis. It doesn’t matter if you add sources of healthy fatty acids to coffee, smoothies, salads, yogurt, pizza, waffles, or whatever else you crave.
